How did I pick my dissertation topic?

談一下 博士論文的題目是怎麼生出來的好了

其實 當初在申請博士班的時候 所提的研究方向是以發生在EMS廠商的生產網絡當中的知識移轉為主題的

然而在考慮到實證上困難(廠商的聯絡和配合) 和 時間的緊迫(要在有限的時間生出一點東西) 再加上 看了Gabriel Szulanski在 Sticky Knowledge 書中所做的那種大規模調查 更加相信自己沒辦法在當前的限制下能有太多的突破 便轉而放棄這原先的想法

當然 確定放棄想法之後 就開始投入破壞大自然環境的工作( 我是指 列印期刊文章或書本章節 ^^)

在翻了Meng Li針對化學廠商的先進者優勢的研究 , Peter Murmann 從共同演化(coevolutionary theory perspective)來解讀英德等國化學產業的發展 在加上自己從事半導體產業的媒體和產業分析經驗 還有一份IC Insights Inc. 針對 全球pure foundary players 的排名(SMIC, HHNEC名列前十) 以及一堆組織理論和策略管理領域的文獻 一些有趣的問題就在我腦海中出現:

1. 雖然不論技術水準或市場成熟還有一段距離 中國晶圓代工廠商是藉著怎樣的力量來擠身全球市場?

2. 除了政府政策 海歸人材投入之外 有沒有其他原因可以解釋?

3. 從共產經濟體制到市場經濟體制的過程當中 , 傳統認知會把制度面的支援和誘因做為其產業發展的關鍵因素 且主張政府部門一定會採取有利於產業發展的作法 然而在中國的發展經驗當中 這樣的主張 在中國自動提前放棄VAT這個明明有損培植本土產業的制度安排之後 不攻自破

4. 除了從技術能力和制度安排這兩種觀點之外 有沒有其他可以觀察這些身處新興市場後進廠商發展的角度?

AIB 2006 Placement Center

在AIB 2006 在北京舉行的期間(June 23-36, 2006) 也有設置Placement Center, 讓那些想找人的學校和想找工作的人 有個商談的機會

雖然知道自己的條件 比起那些名校出身的來說 差距太大 但我也斗膽地透過事先聯繫 取得一間學校的面試機會 雖然只有三十分鐘

Brock University, Canada.

這是位在尼加拉瓜大瀑布附近 距離多倫多還有一小時車程的大學 人口和學生數目都不算多 對於研究和教學的平衡 比起其他所謂的top university而言 算是相對清楚的 對於發表的要求是一年一篇 但是不會太硬性規定是要登上什麼樣水平的期刊 教學和研究之間的調整 也可以視老師的興趣和表現而有所調整

兩三年之後有成立博士班 或和多倫多大學合辦MBA課程

此外 學校對於新進老師 在學期正式開始前也有提供一些teaching training
這種服務對於我這種相對缺乏教學經驗的人而言 算是一項福音了吧

這個職位主要是教大學部的Introduction to International Business 這類的入門課程 還有 strategic management 可能也有機會教一些MBA課程的機會 這個工作的合約是六年 如果評等沒過的話就是打包再見 通過的話 就算取得tenure 了

負責面試的是一個華人教授 談起來算是頗愉快 如果有機會進入下一輪的話 就是到加拿大的campus interview 和 presenatation了

p.s. 後來我查了一下 這間學校的faculty of Business Strategic Plan (Draft) 2005-2012, 發現校方還是可以希望老師的發表集中在Tier 1 或Tier 2的期刊為主 當然這樣的要求對於一個希望能名列FT 100的商學院而言 算是可以理解的 :O

Third JIBS/AIB Papaer Development Workshop, June 23, 2006

這個workshop 是由一個期刊編輯負責主持 然後與會者分別就彼此所指派的文章提出評論 我的文章是被一個法國教授Prof. Pierre-Xavier Meschi所評, 他居然還做了四五頁投影片來說明 真是感動 可能我的東西也真的是頗糟的吧 當然 主持人也對每個人的文章 提出了許多建議

扣掉那些會受限個人主觀所提出的評論 我的東西主要的問題不外乎是英文寫作還有解釋上要更清楚 雖然在heading 和sub heading的安排上 算是很清楚了

整個過程下來 有些老生常談的心得可以歸納如下:

1. 其實搞研究或著說寫東西 這檔事 其實是很publicationl oriented 的 下筆之前 想先想清楚打算發表的刊物為何 好方便在整個研究和寫作過程中對症下藥

2. 所謂研究 也就是說故事的過程 如何讓自己寫的故事能夠清楚交代 來龍去脈 又不會讓人讀之無味 都會是影響能否發表的關鍵

3. 面對審查結果 儘量用正面的態度去處理 用寫問答(或著說申論)題的方式 來回答審查意見 最好是能夠用逐條羅列的方式(事實上 我的第一篇期刊文章在回覆審查意見時 也已經這樣做了 ^^)

4. 非英語系的投稿者 最好還是能找到合適的proofreading 或 technical editor 來幫忙潤稿 增加英文稿的可讀性

換個角度來想 所謂的研究工作 也不過就是在這樣的框架下 追求發表和出版的機會吧

AIB 2006 Chinese Doctoral Consortium, June 22, 2006

一大早來到北京大學光華管理學院 除了計程車師傅,因為先前搞合資被台商矇騙,對臺灣人印象有點差,加上我又壞了他想載客,給人包車的計畫,讓他有點埋怨,差不多花了半小時的車程到了北大。

報到的時候 一個負責辦理的同學居然會把我的名字唸錯,這種我本來認為不可能會發生在內地的事情 居然就發生了 這應該說我名字選的中文太冷僻還是年輕一代對於正體字的掌握越來越生疏了?

可惜沒有辦法抵免150 RMB的報名費,不過在我聽完Jay Barney的報告之後 就很有物超所值的感覺了 事實上這種感覺已經很多年沒有了 :) 他的報告主要是從他的經驗來談 如何透過現象觀察和理論的交互運用來發展理論 :) ,這對想要以理論發展為主的我算是很有收穫的(應該是說自己也不善交際和數字運算吧 XD)。

下午的活動一開始是一個北大老師(HKUST 博士)分享他的投稿經驗。

接下來的分組討論,負責主持的老師也對我的東西從實際的現象,提出了很具關鍵性的建議 :) 這也是難得的收穫。 我自己也針對一個以multinationality為題的報告,提出了自己的意見和想法 不過我發現我現在提問的時候 與其說是質疑 ,反而是比較像是從給建議的角度來做發問。

看來年紀越大 心地越來越善良了 這或許也是另一種轉變吧 :)

透過這個活動 我也看到了內地博士生的研究方向,說到底不外是有種想要西學中用或集大成的作法 。

此外,我也訝異,國際化程度這個概念好像也成為某種形式的熱門題目了。當然透過這個活動,我也感受到他們現在身處的環境所具備的機會和一些年輕老師 所傳遞給學生的眼界和高度。

另外 ,這個活動的主持人是在密西根大學任教的助理教授 ,目前在北大光華管理學院客座一個月。一問之下才知道 她有一篇期刊文章會登在今年八月份的Management Science 這篇文章花了將近一年的時間被接受 而且是single author的作品,實在是處處有高人 真人不露相了。

我想這天的收穫算是很充實的。

關於非英語系環境下的研究定位思考

因為自己的研究並不算突出 因此多數情況下 比較不願意評論或比較個別人士的研究   來到日本之後 或許是學校水平的緣故 讓我看到另外一種文化體系底下的博士訓練 或著應該說是博士生的生存方式

我想下面談的有些狀況 會同樣的發生在非英語系的環境當中

研究結果的呈現 應該是服務於所屬的社群/文化 還是廣義的全人類? 如果答案是後者 英文是目前人們選擇向所謂全球市場推廣的主要媒介 姑且不論其他語系的發表何時能累積到足以取代英文發表的這個現實 英語能力的掌握 成為一個研究人員的基本要求 當然 我自己這方面也還有很大的努力空間 只是身處不同文化體系的我 看到所謂比較"當地化"的研究者對於 英文書寫的心態和反應 心理反竟然有點不齒和訝異

特別是在我發現 即便是自己熱心提供些許語言上的幫助 一不小心反而會被別人視為理所當然 還好自己年長之後稍微善良 但是還有點堅持 不然幾年沒有爆發的火山 可能會因這等小事而傷及無辜

這讓我想到了 一個英文書寫/發表水平不高的非英語系博士生 他在全球學術市場的定位是扮演怎樣的角色 又或著是說能夠扮演怎樣的角色呢?

撇開英語系國家的博士班課程訓練不談 有時候我會相當程度地懷疑 日本博士課程教育的內涵到底是什麼? 她們是怎樣看待和處理日本體系培養下的博士生和國際學術市場的接軌?

如果從投入-產出的概念來看 他們期望一個受過所謂學術訓練的博士生在國際市場上扮演怎樣的角色? 是源自於日本經驗的理論創新 (例如所謂的豐田式管理 和 日本式管理?) 還是他人理論的複製檢驗 又或是透過比較研究的方式來參與?

當然 同樣的問題 也會出現在 非英語系體系的學術研究領域當中 你要如何定位自己的研究 小至所屬的場域 大到放在整個全球(英語的?)市場的位置 我想都有值得思考的方向

當然 這也涉及了當事人本身怎樣看待這樣的訓練過程和隨後對於自身生涯發展的想法了
